Gear Lubes and Additives
The differential gear oil in your Duramax plays a vital role in keeping your differential components from wearing prematurely. Gear oil helps to lubricate the interlocking metal gears to reduce heat and wear for years of worry-free operation. Oftentimes, there are instances where this fluid needs to be changed and Merchant Automotive has everything you need to get the job done. Choose from gear lube, additives, gear oil changing tools, and much more.
Duramax trucks often live a pretty busy and rough life compared to other trucks. These powerful engines are highly sought after to be workhorses for job sites, towing, or just a fun off-road vehicle. This leads to the truck being driven harder than most trucks, meaning they will require more maintenance over the years. One of the areas that you will need to make sure you tend to is the gear oil. Since the gear oil protects your rear axle components from premature wear, it is important to ensure it is clean and free of any foreign materials. GM does not provide a service interval for differential fluid, but routine service may help to promote longevity. GM does suggest to check the fluid level periodically and to drain and replace the differential fluid immediately if the axle is submerged in water.

How To Change Duramax Differential Fluid
Changing the fluid in your Duramax differential is quite easy if you have the right tools. We suggest using an oil syphon pump with tubing to make the job easier.
- Step 1: Place a drain pan under the differential and remove the drain plug.
- Step 2: Remove the fill plug located in the center of the differential.
- Step 3: Inspect the drain plug and replace the gasket if needed. Clean off the drain plug, and reinstall into the differential.
- Step 4: Fill the differential with the correct amount of fluid and replace the drain plug.
